Anyway, I googled more about termitesand found out that all these were signs that there is a termite nest and infestation in our house, somewhere... we had to quickly do something about it! I really panicked... cos who would think that they have termites in their home right, that was the last thing on my mind...
We called up a few companies and gathered quotations. I also heard of the Sentricon system on the radio several times, seems like this was the most effective solution other than the drilling into the ground method and spraying of chemicals. The last 2 solutions for me were filtered OUT immediately... can't afford chemicals with an active and curious toddler in the house. Neither would I want my home flooring to be drilled into! It's not just one hole... they had to drill a hole every arms length apart! Absurd..........
Anyway we settled with a company we got from a brochure. He came to diagnose the problem first and explained the diff. types of termites. He even held one on his hand and showed it to us... ewwwwww. He CONFIRMED that there was a termite colony in our home, and it's always underground. From the ground, they actually transport sand/mud and build these mud tunnels to travel in, they like cool environments. Too warm and they die.
I asked him more about the colony and this was his explanation:
Worker termites are the ones that feed the soldier termites and the King & Queen. The soldiers do not forage for food, only the workers, hence the name. The soldiers are the ones that guard their nest and survey for food. Once a food source is found, soldiers will inform the workers and workers will bring the food back to soldiers and the K & Q.
And the main aim is to eliminate the K & Q, otherwise they will keep reproducing and the colony will still live.
According to the guy, the damage is quite minimal, luckily we discovered early.
Placing the bait along their mud tunnels, the bait is cellulose paper which termites like to feed on
The Sentricon termite bating system. See the mud tunnels on the bottom right corner of the pix?
Anyway, it's been over 2 mths now and the guy has been coming every week in the beginning to spot check, then every fortnight. He increased the bait to two baits and it was enough to slowly diminish the population. He said max 3 mths, the entire colony should be wiped out. I can't wait for everything to be over................ The last time he checked, it was fantastic news and result, now we just have to wait for a while more. We also bought cupboard locks to discourage Jayden from opening the cupboard.
Anyone having the same problem and what was your solution?
