Ouch!

Need your help mummies, ever since Jayden wasn't feeling well, his bowel movements have been irregular... he used to be able to do it everyday, or at least once every 2 days. But for the past week or so, he will only poo on the 3rd day, thank God it didn't pass 4 days yet. And yesterday for the first time, he pushed so hard to poo and a pellet like stool came out, it was pretty hard :( i quickly lay him down and put up his legs, and the rest came out soft and normal. But the hard stool was the one blocking the rest of his stools... when I saw it, I was shocked!!!! I felt so much pain for my poor baby... he pushed so hard till his face turned all red and he cried a little too.

What suggestions can you offer for Jayden to have normal bowel movements again?

I tried these few solutions, hopefully it will help:

-diluted his milk from 5 scoops to 3 with 150ml of water (he gets hungry faster cos I think the milk is diluted)
-gave him fruit puree
-made porridge with carrot + sweet potato puree
-boiled barley water without sugar
-mashed banana

Any advice will be appreciated :)

Kristie - I face this problem w K even till now. What I usually do - get him to eat more leafy veges like spinach, brocolli, kailan. Also fruits like apples, grapes and oranges seem to help. And if still difficult, try diluted prune juice.

poor boy...it is the milk powder formula problem? As i know some baby not suitable with those milk powder will face this problem.

Since Jayden no yet reach 1 1/2 year old he can't eat banana. As i know Banana is a fruit which help baby more easy to poo...
This is what i let Natalie eat banana and her is normal till now.

Maybe you try to let him drnk more water...

Oh Poor Jayden boy. It's not advisable to dilute the milk powder. What milk powder is he taking? But I dont think it's the milk, coz you said this happen after he recovered from his sickness right? Try giving him apples extracted by grating it with the grater with tiny holes. The apples which were grated turned out real smooth and you can feed it to him. How about adding greens to his porridge? Drink plenty of water too. I think its temporarily only. Dont worry.

1)use barley water (boiled) to pour milk
2)Dr got a kind of medicine can let poo poo soft de
3)NovaLac milk powder (buy at pharmacy) can help poo poo soft, after poo poo stable, turn back to normal milk powder.

poor baby. you are already doing so many things to help him with his bowel movement. good job :D you think he could take some prune juice? try to give him some papaya puree too. it helps. i read somewhere that banana doesn't help with constipation though. If it gets really worse, then you could ask the paed for some stool softener. Ashley used to experience that and her paed gave her some stool softener to be taken for a few days. After that her stool became soft again and she advised that we give her lots of water, papaya and sweet potato.

At his age, you should avoid bananas because banana won't help his constipation but will only cause more at such a young age. YOu can google it up. Health expert will tell you that bananas will only help bowel movement when they are older not when when are still an infant. It's only a phase, it's best you consult a doctor! :)

Sharlene had this problem some time back. It was really bad. I realized it could be her milk powder and true enough, after I changed it no more constipation problem until now. *touch wood* From Enfagrow A+ to Dutch lady 456.

She takes prune juice as well. It helps. Perhaps Jayden can try? Hmm...barley drink is good also. Poor boy, hopefully his bowel movement will be back to normal again.

Hi Kristie, my 2 gals also faced the same problem, especially the younger one, use to have her bowel movement every 3 days & their poo is real hard! Really worries me. My mum taught me that Gripe water do help, give a small teaspoon everyday. It works, for my kids. But I heard before maybe is becoz of the milk powder, so now I have change to PediaSure, especially formulated for better digestion. Now my little one's poo not as hard as stone anymore. You can check out the product website at: http://www.abbott.com.my/ped_nutri/pn_thr_form_pediasure_complete.asp

Poor little guy.. i can relate to that bec sometimes my little YL is having hard time pushing too..

Our pedia said to feed him a little water to avoid constipation.. or maybe bec of the formula..but dont dilute his formula, its not good.

Or better to ask your pediatrician, bec every baby are not the same. Better safe than sorry..right?

Poor Jayden...you can try Novalac milk powder (recommended by Daniel's doctor). Let Jayden tries it until his poo poo is stable, then you can switch back to his formula milk powder. If his poo poo still hard after switch back to his formula, then I guess better change to other brand.

came across your site thru rachel's
my boy was breastfeed and for the first 6 mths, I hardly feed him water. and of course my mum make noise! cos she can't imagine not feeding the baby water!
anyway, i think if your child is taking formula, it might help to give him more fruits, vege and water to help the constipation problem.

So how is Jayden bowel movement now?

I think with the fruit puree could help him.

I have heard from forum. Mommies said, banana is good for adult if we have constipation, but not baby. I also dont know how true is it.
